MARCH “Shifting Sand” Thursday March 11–Saturday 13, CarriageWorks, Sydney Shifting Sand is a new work conceived and composed by TaikOz member Graham Hilgendorf. Inspired by the beach and the ocean, Shifting Sand is a powerful evocation of the ocean’s many faces - from the delicate play of light on the surface of the sea to the raging fury of winter storms, TaikOz’s thunderous taiko, dynamic movement and dance seeks to capture the beauty, majesty and force of the ocean. Full: $56 Concession: $35 / All concerts at 7pm
Live-House 2 Riley Lee, shakuhachi and Special Guest Jeff Peterson, guitar Monday March 29, Italian Forum Cultural Centre, Leichhardt Join Riley and his long-time collaborator, US slack-key guitarist Jeff Peterson, at our second Live-House concert at the Forum. Riley and Jeff won 'Instrumental Album of the Year' in the Hawaiian 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
The concert, entitled Haleakalâ, celebrates the music of Hawai'i and includes standard melodies, original compositions and solo works. Jeff was raised on the slopes of Maui's dramatic dormant volcano, Haleakalâ, and Riley grew up on the island of O'ahu. When they first performed together in 1999, the combination of shakuhachi and ki ho'alu (slack-key guitar) was unheard of. Now music cirtics are calling their collaboration 'fascinating' and a natural fit.
"The warm tones of Peterson's guitar are complemented beautifully by Lee's flute. The interplay by between ki ho'alu and shakuhachi seems so natural that one wonders why it took so long for the two to be combined" Honolulu Star Bulletin
All tickets $30 / Concert starts at 6pm
