In Sydney, TaikOz holds taiko classes on every day of the week over four terms in the year for anyone interested in taiko. Many sessions run for 1.5 hours and follow a set curriculum in which members begin with stretches and warm-up exercises, followed by technical instruction in striking the taiko and practice of pieces, as well as movement, dance and song. History and conceptual ideas are also covered over the course of each term.

There are a range of classes from which you can choose:

BEGINNER I AND II CLASSES

On Thursday nights TaikOz presents two 8-week classes: Beginner Stage I (6:30-8pm) and Beginner Stage II (8:15-9:45pm). These are designed specifically for first-timers in which the basics are covered in detail, thus equipping the student to move into Intermediate classes at the conclusion of the terms. No previous experience or musical training is necessary.

Beginner Stage I sessions cover such basic techniques as grip, stance, form, simple rhythms and musical arrangements. At the conclusion of the 8-week term you may choose to move to Beginner Stage II or an Intermediate class. We recommend that you consult with your teacher before deciding which class is the best fit.

Beginner Stage II sessions carry on where Beginner I classes end. The 8-week curriculum covers further work on the basics, but within the context of learning a fully composed piece of music. At the conclusion of Beginners Stage II you will be ready to join an ongoing weekly Intermediate Class.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES

These classes are for players who have some experience of playing the taiko, although having taiko experience is not a pre-requisite. TaikOz recommends that you join the Beginner I and II Classes before moving into an ongoing Intermediate Class. However, all new players are welcome to join an Intermediate Class if the Thursday time doesn't suit. If you fall into this category, please give us a ring on (02) 9572 8595 before signing up for a weekly Intermediate Class. (See below for timetable of specific days and times).

Intermediate Class Members learn a new piece of music each year and cover a range of styles, techniques and musical concepts, as well as delve further into Wadaiko history and practice. The curriculum spans four 8-week terms.

YOUTH CLASSES I AND II

TaikOz runs classes on Saturday afternoons aimed at young musicians. From 12:30-1:45pm TaikOz presents a class for students aged from 11 to 16 and another for younger children aged from 6 to 10 that runs from 12:30-1:15pm. The two age groups will often work together in the same studio, but each will have their own teacher. Sometimes the younger students will move to a second nearby dojo (studio). A wide range of taiko styles and music is covered in these classes. From time to time the Youth Class groups have an opportunity to perform.

"It is not often one can combine physicality with music making, but taiko provides one with this opportunity. It is certainly a challenge, where one is able to progress at one's own pace without judgment, only encouragement. Playing taiko is both a team effort and a personal endeavour, challenging one to free the body of its restrictions, as well as enjoy the feeling of being at one with the other players – flowing with the group momentum."
Liz McKenzie, Class Member

"I have been studying taiko drumming for about 3 years. As a woman in m y late 30's, it has been an excellent form of exercise in an environment that supports all age groups and abilities. I came into taiko drumming with absolutely no musical background, only a keen interest in a musical and physical activity that looked beautiful and sounded great. As time has gone on, I have found a wonderful sense of community in my class and the collective of the taiko school. Many of us have been given the opportunity to perform outside our school concert in Japanese cultural events. Through playing music together our differences in life experience, age and gender disappear to create a common ground and hopefully, sound!"
Elizabeth Znidersic, Class Member

JANUARY INTENSIVE 2010

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS

TaikOz conducts many workshops around Australia. These range from 2-hour "Taiko Is For Everyone!” sessions for the interested novice, to 3, 4 and 5-day courses for experienced players who wish to delve deeper into the music, history and concepts of taiko playing.

Information on upcoming workshops is listed below.

“The first reason that I started to learn Wadaiko, was because I just wanted to try to take a close look at the big taiko, touch it, and pound it with all my strength. I didn't know at that time that the taiko was a casket that is filled with many interesting things. The more I know the taiko, the more I become engrossed in it.”
Rieko Tanaka, Class Member
