Past Extension Classeskatsugi okedo
TERM 1 2012SATURDAY 2PM - 3.30PMThe Katsugi Okedo stems from a recent collaboration (only a generation ago) between Japanese taiko drummers and Korean players of the ancient changgo drum. While the Japanese form of 'slung drumming' has since developed its own sound and style, the Korean influence is obvious to both eye and ear in the use of the electrifying over-hand stick technique of the accomplished player. In this class, you will learn the technique to play the Katsugi Okedo style and also learn a new piece. To join the Katsugi Okedo Extension class in Term 1 you need to be enrolled in a TaikOz Elementary or Intermediate class, so add the option when you book your main class.
YATAIBAYASHITERM 4 2011Yataibayashi is one of the most exciting and demanding of traditional Wadaiko styles and a cornerstone of the TaikOz repertoire. 'Yataibayashi' loosely translates as 'cart accompaniment music'. A 'yatai' (or dashi) is a large, wheeled float. 'Hayashi' refers to an instrumental ensemble that often comprises taiko, atarigane and the horizontal bamboo flute known as shinobue. Over the course of the class, we focus on Yataibayashi's unique rhythmic feel, form, musical arrangement, strength and endurance. Chudaiko patterns and shimedaiko tamaire (solo playing) will also be explored in this class. To join the Yataibayashi Extension class in Term 4 you need to be enrolled in a TaikOz Elementary or Intermediate class, so add the option when you book your main class. This class is designed to reach for the 'essence' of Yataibayashi and so each session is physically demanding. Players will be required to sit cross-legged on the floor and play for extended periods of time.
