Where is your studio?

The TaikOz School Dojo (Japanese word for studio) is in a warehouse complex in the Sydney suburb of Ultimo. Our address is:

'The Ultimo Centre'

Level W40

42 - 46 Wattle Steet, Ultimo

dojo

Can anyone join a taiko class?

Our oldest student is 70 years old, so age should not prohibit you from joining our classes. Our classes can be quite physical, so please check with your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions before joining. Our classes are designed to cater for beginners through to experienced taiko players. To find out more about our classes, click here.

If you are considering joining a class but are not too sure of what to expect, you could start by giving our introductory workshop, 'Taiko is for Everyone' a try. To find out more, including when the next workshop is click here.

What do I bring to class and what should I wear?

You should bring a bottle of water to class and we recommend you eat 1.5 - 2 hours before class. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing so you can move around with ease and be prepared to take off your shoes. A towel is also handy just in case.

Do you have to be musical to join classes?

Everyone has music and rhythm within themselves and it is the TaikOz teacher's job to help bring it out of you! Nevertheless, formal music training is not a pre-requisite. Many students have begun our classes without any musical background and by working on the taiko, have developed their musical skills.

What happens after I have joined a class?

Our terms run for eight weeks during which time you will work with your fellow students and teacher on developing skills on the taiko. We hope you will enjoy your first term with us so much that you will become part of the TaikOz family and will continue enrolling each term! Click here for more details on class enrolments. In addition to our taiko classes, we also offer special Extension classes. These classes explore all areas of taiko practice, which will extend you and broaden your experience. The focus of this class changes each term and includes dance and movement, shinobue (Japanese bamboo flute), Hachijo style and Yataibayashi style. Click here to read about our current Extension class.

If you are really excited about the training we offer, then you may wish to start practicing regularly. We can arrange private lessons for you, or our second dojo (studio) can be booked for extra practice. Speak to your teacher for more information or email classes@taikoz.com

There is also a student run group that you can join, which offers a chance to meet other enthusiasts, create your own music and perform. Click here to learn more about Taiko no Wa.

Is it going to be loud?

The taiko is a powerful instrument when played at any volume and we encourage our students to explore the full range of the dynamics (volumes) when practicing the many and varied styles we cover. Keeping that in mind, we recommend to all our students the use of earplugs, as prolonged exposure to louder dynamics can, over time, damage your hearing.

All members of TaikOz wear some form of hearing protection during our rehearsals and when teaching. You can purchase some very effective earplugs relatively cheaply at most chemists or safety clothing stores.

We hope to see you in a TaikOz class soon!
