The very characters that make up the word taiko (太鼓) – 太 (tai) ‘fat’ or ‘big around’ and 鼓 (ko) ‘drum’ – aptly describe the look, sound and feel of our beautiful instruments. Come and join us as we explore the energy, drama and excitement of Yatai Bayashi.
This style and its music hails from the town of Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and physically demanding taiko forms. Being the first piece learned by Taikoz in 1997, Yataibayashi is a ‘touchstone’ of our repertoire and all members are required to regularly study its intricacies. In this course you will be taken through the basics of the style, the mijikai-te, or short theme and Tamaire.
