For over 20 years, Australian performing ensemble Taikoz has thrilled audiences with their dynamism, musical and physical expression, original music and productions, vast array of hand-crafted instruments, and unique collaborations with artists of many styles, genres and disciplines.
Each Taikoz member is a highly trained Taiko Artist committed to creating a new genre of music combining the traditions, techniques and aesthetic principles of Japanese taiko with Australian creativity, energy, inventiveness, theatricality and individuality.

Our mission has been to create original music with the taiko – the Japanese drums – at its heart and we need YOU – WOMEN COMPOSERS OF AUSTRALIA – to join us in our quest!

On Friday 12 June and Saturday 13 June, Taikoz presents AADYA: TSUBASA HORI & THE WOMEN OF TAIKOZ

Taikoz’s four amazingly talented and powerful female players will perform the winning entry of our COMPOSITION COMPETITION at the Darling Quarter Theatre in a program led by the fabulous Kerryn Joyce and incredible International Taiko Artist Tsubasa Hori (http://tsubasahori.com)

The competition is open to female composers of any age residing anywhere in Australia. We are looking for a highly original work of 5-6 minutes duration. Entries are due by Friday April 17. The winning composition will be chosen on Monday April 20 and performed on June 12
and 13 in AADYA: TSUBASA HORI AND THE WOMEN OF TAIKOZ at the Darling Quarter Theatre.

If you live outside of Sydney, we will fly and put you up in Sydney from June 10-14 so you can attend the final two rehearsals and of course, the two performances.

And, you will receive $1,500 prize money!

ENTRY INFORMATION
• Only female composers may apply
• There is no age restriction
• Entries are welcome Australia-wide (see note below re. * The Winner residing outside of Sydney)
• The Composer does not need to be an Australian citizen, but should currently be a resident
• Entries are due by Friday April 17 2020
• The work will be of 5-6 minute duration and composed for the Women Of Taikoz Quartet
• The instrumentation and stylistic forms are described in the downloadable PDF - Aadya Tsubasa Hori & The Women Of TZ | Instrumentation & Stylistic Forms (see note regarding assistance and resources, if required)
• Consideration should be given to the performer’s need to learn the music by heart
• The winning composition will be chosen on Monday April 20 2020 and The Winner notified by the end of business on the same day
• The Winner will receive $1,500 prize money
• The Winning Composition will be performed on Friday the 12th and Saturday June 13 in AADYA: TSUBASA HORI AND THE WOMEN OF TAIKOZ at the Darling Quarter Theatre
• The Winning Composition will be recorded by Taikoz (date TBC)
• The Winner can attend the final rehearsals on June 10-11 and the dress rehearsal and performance June 12 and performance on June 13.
* If the Winner resides outside of Sydney, they will be flown & accommodated in Sydney June 10-14 courtesy of Taikoz

Note: Taikoz is holding a Composing for Taiko Workshop May 29-31 at its Sydney Dojo. It will be led by International Guest Artist Tsubasa Hori and Taikoz Artistic Director / Composer Ian Cleworth and will entail general discussion and information about composing for taiko,
workshopping of musical material, and demonstrations of stylistic and technical forms particular to taiko. The Winner is welcome to attend these workshops at no cost, but if they reside outside of Sydney, flights and accommodation are the responsibility of the individual.


FURTHER INFORMATION
• Scores must have no identifying markings in either the file or the file name
• Scores must be created in Finale, Sibelius, or some other type of music entry software program
• All score submissions must be in PDF file format
• A live or MIDI recording may also be submitted as an adjunct the score, but is not essential
• If a live or MIDI recording is submitted, then must have no identifying markings (e.g. names of performers and composer etc.)
• Recordings should be submitted as MP3 files
• We suggest sending MP3 files via a large file platform such as WeTransfer, Google docs etc.
• Incomplete applications or applications with identifying markings will be disqualified
• An entry confirmation will appear at the time of submission (an email confirmation will not be sent)
• The selected winner gives Taikoz the rights to perform their work for three years with the first 12 months exclusive to Taikoz and record their work for up to three years without further compensation.
• Please note: your winning work will be distributed. If you reference the creative or intellectual property of another person (poetry text, visual art, or extended quotation of another work), you must have the secured the legal rights to distribute the work before entering the
competition.
