We have a very exciting project coming up next week that we'd like to share with you... our Meditation Marathon.
On the afternoon of Sunday June 21, Taikoz and 16 featured artists will undertake a four-hour musical meditation that will be streamed from Phoenix Central Park (... as Phoenix describe it... "the newly built immersive performance and visual arts centre where architecture and the arts create a total immersive experience.")
Although Taikoz will be without our beloved taiko instruments, we will bring our ritualistic aesthetic and musical intensity to creating a four-hour continuous drone on a large rin (temple bowl).
Interacting with the subtle changes of the drone, a wide range of amazing performing artists will improvise long, arching musical lines. With the concept of a mandala in mind, over the 4 hours each soloist will begin playing/dancing/singing on the upper level of Phoenix - quietly duetting with the current soloist on the bottom level - and slowly & calmly descend the spiral staircase to meet their duet partner and gently take over by soloing with the rin-drone. In time, the next soloist will begin upstairs creating their sounds, moods, moves, songs and dances, process downwards, & so on & so on... for four hours. Their combined energies will create a non-stop magical flow of sound, texture and melody.
Inspired by ‘slow cinema’ and influenced by the current CV-19 crisis, which has forced many of us to slow down, take stock and reassess our priorities, we invite you all to tune into the webcast on June 21 and respond in any way you choose... meditate, chant, sit quietly, dance, sing, play, or simply tune in and out as you wish. All are welcome to share in our Meditation Marathon!
This performance is part of Create NSW's contribution to worldwide Make Music Day and produced by Phoenix Central Park. Webcast details will be realeased shortly.
And we will soon let you know who is performing on the day... tantalising!
The beautiful photo of our rin is c/- Jayson McBride...
