After taking a short break over Christmas, Taikoz are back in the studio working on the music of young Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth. Evocatively titled “Breath Of Thunder”, Lachlan’s piece is the finale of the SSO’s program “Taikoz and the SSO”, which will be performed on February 22-24 in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House.
When discussing the program with SSO Director of Artistic Planning Raff Wilson, the idea of having Taikoz and the orchestra remain on stage for the whole time took hold. The SSO will perform excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s “The Prince Of The Pagodas”, while our own repertoire – plus the music of old friend and international shinobue-taiko star Kaoru Watanabe, and of course our own world-renowned shakuhachi master Riley Lee – will be played in and around it. The performance will culminate in “Breath Of Thunder”.
There are not too many works for taiko and orchestra – let alone shakuhachi and shinobue, too! – and we are all feeling very excited to be taking part in the creation of this wonderful new music. Come and share it with us!
