Taikoz is pleased to offer the Individual Development Program again in 2020. Initiated in 2008, the IDP has proven very popular with taiko players who are keen on developing their technical and musical skills. The program is very comprehensive, involving an average of four sessions per week over the February-December period. It is an exciting and challenging program.
What is the IDP & when does it take place?
The Individual Development Program (IDP) runs from February to early December 2020 and is for experienced taiko players who wish to advance their technical and musical skills in playing taiko, shinobue, singing and dancing (specifically Onikenbai). There is an emphasis on ensemble playing, and as such, successful IDP candidates will take lessons together and work as a musical ensemble.

What's involved in the IDP?
Focus is on weekly taiko lessons with a principal taiko teacher, which is in addition to ten lessons on shinobue and ten lessons in singing, dance and movement. Over the course of 32 weeks within the 10 month period (February to December), and on a variety of days of the week, a range of other lessons covering different aspects of taiko style and technique will be given by Taikoz players. Attending Onikenbai Club is strongly recommended as part of the IDP. Each person will be expected to commit to an average of four teaching, practice and rehearsal *sessions per week and demonstrate a willingness to work in a dedicated fashion.
* Sessions can last from 90 minutes to 3 hours
Over the course of the February-December period, IDP players will have the opportunity to take part in the following:
- 32 small group taiko sessions
- 32 **IDPE sessions
- 10 shinobue sessions
- 10 singing/movement & dancing sessions
- Weekly community classes (approximately 32)
- Onikenbai Club (most Saturday mornings throughout the year)
** IDPE is an ensemble made up of past IDP participants. The ensemble size ranges from 7-10 players and the focus is on learning Taikoz repertoire (usually one work, sometimes two).
What's involved in applying for the IDP?
Applicants must have a minimum of six months taiko playing experience. Entrance to the IDP is based on an audition process. The entry criterion is based on a player demonstrating technical and musical skill over a range of taiko techniques, styles and music, including singing.
How do I apply?
Send an email to classes@taikoz.com (c.c. ad@taikoz.com) addressed to Sophia Ang (Classes Coordinator) and Ian Cleworth (Artistic Director) indicating your interest in applying for the IDP by NOVEMBER 15. Information regarding audition requirements will be sent to you on NOVEMBER 16 after Taikoz has considered your application. If you have any queries, please contact Ian at ad@taikoz.comWhat is involved in the audition?
For applicants residing outside of Sydney, an audition video can be submitted by 5:00PM on Friday DECEMBER 13. Live auditions for local Sydney players will be held on Saturday DECEMBER 14, 9:00-11:30AM. Details of the audition (what to prepare and perform) will be sent to successful IDP applicants by NOVEMBER 18 (see below under “Important Dates”).
How much does the IDP cost?
The cost of the IDP is AUD$3,120. Payment can be made in full or in monthly instalments (if this option is preferable, please contact Classes Coordinator Sophia Ang at classes@taikoz.com to discuss.

Anything else?
Over the course of eleven months IDP participants will:
- Perform a 45-minute recital at the completion of the IDP featuring works studied in the program
- Participate in one weekly community class
- Have the opportunity to attend Taikoz training sessions
- Have the opportunity to assist backstage at concerts
- Technical work
- A range of taiko styles and techniques
- Body awareness
- Performance practice
- Taiko culture and history
