Dear Friends,
With time on our hands during lockdown 2020, a few of us got a little dreamy (some would say carried away!) and came up with the thought, “Hey, once things settle down, why not celebrate with that special group of instruments that so easily crosses time, borders, demographics, style and genres?" Yes, you guessed it… drums and percussion! Well, that little thought grew into the inaugural BOOM! International Festival of Percussion and here at Percussion Australia, we’re working hard to deliver a unique and uniquely amazing festival from October 1-8.
With over 70 incredible artists - yes 70! - each day will see a wonderfully eclectic mix of percussive activities. From masterclasses, to hands-on workshops, talks and demonstrations, plus Zoom sessions with three top international percussionists, each day of the festival is capped off with not one, but two evening concerts! That’s 32 sessions of rhythm, melody, harmony, sound and texture, all delivered with knowledge, skill and passion!
This is all book-ended by two major concerts that feature some of Australia’s finest percussive talent. From 10 shimmering "gong stations” surrounding the audience, to the World Premiere of two new works by the extraordinary Timothy Constable, the opening concert on October 1 at the grand old Sydney Town Hall showcases Taikoz, Synergy, Claire Edwardes, Jason Noble, Michael Askill, Greta Kelly and Jess Ciampa.
The closing show on October 8 is at the Seymour Centre and is a totally up-beat, joyful rhythm-fest featuring the virtuosic Circle of Rhythm with Sandy Evans, the groove-infused Latin vibes of Caribé, and a spectacular finale conceived, composed and performed by ex-Taikoz, Cirque de Soleil star and now Colombia-based international Producer, DJ, Drummer and Performing Artist Anton Lock - with some help from his old Taikoz mates!
I can't tell you how excited we are to be presenting this festival. Furthermore, we hope to make it a biennial event, so to help make this dream a reality, you can do your part by getting involved and checking out one or two sessions, or maybe a handful, or what about diving in and attending the whole week! Please show your support for BOOM! by buying an experience to share with your friends. We are offering a group ticket discount offer of 4 or 10 tickets.
We’d love to see you at the Sydney Town Hall on October 1 and then for the rest of the week at the Seymour Centre.
Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support.
Best wishes,
Ian Cleworth
