Japanese studies in action! Begin your taiko journey while immersing yourself in Japanese language and culture.
Learn the technical basics of taiko and sample a few specific playing styles in our Beginners classes – the perfect starting ground for your taiko journey. The curriculum is divided into two 9-week periods: Beginners A and Beginners B, and over the course of two terms, you will be introduced to the foundations of taiko, including exploring numerous traditional playing styles, learning the names of the many different drums that make up the taiko family, and taiko terminology.
The difference between a regular Beginners class is that you are going to learn not only taiko but also Japanese language!
Designed for students with elementary to intermediate Japanese language skills, the course focuses on learning basic words, sentence structures and grammar used in the context of taiko playing.
The course is led by experienced teachers with qualifications in Japanese language teaching, as well as vast experience in Japanese cultural studies and performing arts. Both English and Japanese will be used for instructions.
Prior musical training is not required – just bring yourself and an open heart and mind! All of our classes have a welcoming and fun atmosphere and we are sure you will walk away with rhythm in your body.
Please note students are required to have their own bachi (sticks). If you wish to purchase these from Taikoz you may do so at the special student price of $45.
It is the Academy's policy that students must wear hearing protection while attending our classes. You can bring your own ear plugs, or purchase reusable ear plugs from our shop for $35 or disposable foam ear plugs at the dojo for $1.50.
