The very characters that make up the word taiko (太鼓) – 太 (tai) ‘fat’ or ‘big around’ and 鼓 (ko) ‘drum’ – aptly describe the look, sound and feel of our beautiful instruments. Taking that as our inspiration, let’s make a big, fat sound together on Saturday mornings at 8.45am. Come and join us for an ‘Hour Of Power’ as we explore the energy, drama and excitement of the Big Drums!
‘Hour Of Power’ will be offered throughout the year in blocks of 4 weeks. Each 4-week block of sessions will focus on a particular taiko and style, or sometimes two or three combined (e.g. Yataibayashi Nagado / Odaiko Improvisation / Shimedaiko Tamaire). The teacher will give some technical and musical instruction, but the focus will be on sustained playing, including improvisation.
Booking is for 4 consecutive sessions.
Next Series: ODAIKO (because of a limited number of odaiko instruments, participant numbers will be capped at 10)

- Open to any taiko players – all levels of experience welcome
- For current Taikoz students enrolled in other classes please book under concession fee
- No warm-ups included in the class (please warm-up beforehand)
- Wear loose-fitting clothing and bring a towel and water bottle
- Bring
your own nagado and odaiko bachi (although Yataibayashi nagado-bachi
can be supplied when required for Yatai sessions); please notify a
Taikoz member if you need to purchase bachi
- As this class involves sustained playing on large taiko, please consider your fitness before booking in (if in doubt, consult your GP)
