Workshops

The Australian Taiko Academy presents four types of Play Taiko Workshops, each distinct from the other!

Learn how to play the fascinating, awe-inspiring taiko! Join one of our 90-minute Play Taiko workshop offerings or get the family together to enjoy a 60-minute Family Play Taiko Workshop.

About our different workshops:

1. Introduction to Japanese Drums
A general introduction to the taiko, in which you receive instruction in the basics of stance, grip and stroke-making. You will also learn a short piece of music to play together towards the end of the session.

2. Odaiko - Beat the grand drum!
Taiko is synonymous with ‘big drums’ and in this session, you are introduced to the largest taiko of them all – the Odaiko or Grand Drum. After receiving instruction in stance, grip and stroke-making, you will learn a variety of simple and fun Odaiko beating patterns. It is also a real workout!

3. Festival Drumming - Work Your Abs!
In Japan, taiko are often heard in the annual matsuri or festival, and one such festival drumming style presents a real workout for the abs! Seated on the floor behind a Chudaiko (medium-size drum), you lean back and beat with all your heart and soul! After receiving instruction in body position, grip and stroke-making, you will learn a short rhythm and play it with the whole group, ‘round robin’ style.

4. Family Play Taiko
This 60- minute workshop has been created so all members of your family (8+ years) can experience the joy of playing taiko together. Parents and children; grandparents and grandkids; aunties, uncles and nieces, nephews – everyone is welcome!

Play Taiko will leave you with a unique group experience that will energise, stimulate and excite. Taiko playing requires great energy and teamwork, as well as total integration of one’s mind, body and spirit; the rhythm of the taiko pulsates through your body – its expression is primal and earthy.

Taiko playing is also great exercise. It is a musical activity that is challenging and fun, and offers wonderful benefits like reducing stress, aiding relaxation and inviting personal expression. The Taikoz Artists who lead our workshops are all highly trained performers and teachers. Prior musical training is not a requirement.

FURTHER INFORMATION
You do not need to purchase a pair of bachi (drumsticks) and earplugs to participate in this workshop.
